Public Libraries are welcoming spaces for all. At The County of Prince Edward Public LIbrary, removing barriers to access and including everyone in the community continues to be a priority.
Starting with the County’s earliest learners, the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program encourages children and their grown-ups to take on the challenge of reading 1000 Books before the start of school.
Graduates from the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program join the Impressive Reader Society and recieve a lawn sign, with one reader highlighted each month in the newspaper.
School class visits are welcome at every branch of the library.
In December 2022, we have welcomed visits from Bayfield, CML and PECI to the library, and visited Sophiasbugh to explore circuitry by making LED cards.
After school club continues at the Wellington Branch Library, with a series highlighting Earth Sciences wrapping up in December.
In January, “Love Your Self-ie” will begin, with yoga, movement and mindfulness. Participants will even grow their own veggies using the garden tower.
Picton Branch Library Expansion
The Picton Branch is currently under construction. In early 2023 we will move into the newly constructed space, while the existing space is restored. By the end of 2023 we should be happily utilizing the entire space for learning and growth!
New spaces will include:
• Makerspace for STEAM experimentation and learning
• Meeting rooms for lectures and class visits
• Study rooms
• A refreshed children’s room
• Teen space with VR & new tech and more!

Youth volunteer opportunity
With youth spaces coming at the expanded Picton Branch, we are planning to start the Teen Advisory Board again later this spring (2023). Years ago, the library was fortunate to have guidance from local youth in the form of a Teen Advisory Board. The group decided things like the colour of the walls in the Teen Room at the Picton Branch Library, shaped programming plans and gave their opinion on the books that were purchased.
The work on this committee will qualify as volunteer hours and is a great way for high school students to have a meaningful impact on their library.
